The familiar recycling logo includes three arrows. These days, most people have mastered the first – separating their waste materials and putting out the paper and plastics to be collected by the Fort Smith Department of Sanitation for recycling.
That’s a great start, but Fort Smith aims to be a community filled with recycling leaders who are committed to completing the cycle.
The second arrow represents the sale and reprocessing of the material to be re-used as new products. Fort Smith is a leader in this area – having relationships with outstanding recycling partners who ensure that the material collected from our residents is transformed into high-quality, high-value new products.
The third arrow represents the purchase of recycled products – something everyone in Fort Smith can do. Why does this matter? First, buying recycled products increases their value, which benefits a community like ours that deals in large quantities of recyclable material. Second, it reduces the waste stream and extends the life of our landfill. Third, it conserves nature’s raw materials. Fourth, it helps create a cleaner environment and quality of life.
We all know the wisdom of recycling. We recognize it every time we put out our waste for collection by the Department of Sanitation. As a community of recycling leaders – completing the cycle in all walks of our lives – we can take the next step to truly impact the quality of life in Fort Smith!
